Métro and Buses

If you plan to be in Paris for a week (or at least five days), the best transportation buy is the Carte d'Orange. (The explanation is in the French part of the
Métro's web page.) You can purchase one in any Métro station. You should buy the weekly «hebdo», second class, Zones 1 - 2 (Paris) ticket for €13.50, about $17.50. Don't buy the three-day pass, it's not a value. You will need a picture of each person purchasing a «Carte d'Orange» which you can take in the photo booths in almost any Métro station for €5. You also will need the plastic wallet, «portefeuille», which the Métro agent will give you for the Carte d'Orange and the ticket. It also comes with a Métro and bus map. The Carte d'Orange is good for unlimited use on the Métro, on all buses, even on the RER during the week's period of validity. These tickets are sold on a Monday-to-Sunday basis. (Don't forget to sign your Carte d'Orange and to put the number of your «Carte d'Orange» on your ticket!) If your stay in Paris is less than a week, or you don't think you will be taking public transit a lot, buy a «carnet de dix», a book of ten, one-way tickets than can be used on the Métro or buses.

You also can purchase a 1-, 3- or 5-day museum pass «Carte Musées et Monuments» at most Métro stations. With the museum pass, you avoid standing in the long lines to purchase tickets. The pass is good at most, but not all, museums.
